Six Key Considerations When Choosing Your Handgun

Six Key Considerations When Choosing Your Handgun

Selecting the right handgun is one of the most crucial decisions you’ll make when it comes to your personal safety and self-defense. With endless options available, it can be overwhelming, especially for first-time buyers. But don’t worry—I’m here to simplify the process for you. My name is Joe Malone, a retired MARSOC Marine and the CEO and Founder of JM Training and Lethality University. Over the years, I’ve guided hundreds of students and clients through the process of selecting the ideal handgun for their needs.

So, what should you consider when buying a handgun? Whether you’re a first-time buyer or looking to add to your collection, here are six key considerations to help you make an informed decision.

1. Can You Get a High Grip Under the Beaver Tail?

The beaver tail is the part of the handgun frame that extends over the webbing of your hand. One of the first things you should check is whether you can get your hand high and tight up under the beaver tail without discomfort. A good high grip will allow you better control of the firearm, especially during recoil. If you notice any gap between your hand and the beaver tail, it could lead to less control and more discomfort while shooting.

2. Finger-to-Trigger Length

Proper trigger control is essential for accurate shooting. To ensure this, you need to check the distance between your trigger finger and the trigger itself. Ideally, you want to be able to place the pad of your index finger on the trigger with ease. If you can comfortably reach the trigger and pull it smoothly, you’ve found a good match.

3. Thumb Reach to the Slide Catch

Another consideration is whether you can easily reach the slide catch with your thumb. While it’s not an absolute dealbreaker, being able to manipulate the slide catch without shifting your grip is a big advantage. It means you’ll be able to handle the gun more smoothly and efficiently in a self-defense scenario.

4. Thumb Reach to the Magazine Release

Similarly, check whether you can reach the magazine release button without shifting your grip. The ability to quickly drop the magazine and reload without adjusting your hand position is essential for those who carry for self-defense. The smoother your reload process, the better your chances in a critical situation.

5. Can You Rack and Lock the Slide Easily?

The slide plays a critical role in loading your weapon, clearing malfunctions, and ensuring it’s ready to fire. You need to have the physical strength to rack and lock the slide. If a handgun’s slide feels too stiff or difficult to manipulate, it might not be the right choice for you. Always test this before making a purchase, as you’ll want to ensure you’re comfortable with it in both training and real-life scenarios.

6. Can You Shoot It Effectively?

Finally, can you shoot the handgun well? Shooting involves multiple factors such as grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control, and recoil management. You need to be confident that the firearm’s recoil isn’t overwhelming and that you can shoot accurately, especially in rapid succession. Make sure the gun’s caliber and weight feel comfortable when firing.

Bonus Considerations

While the six points above primarily focus on how the gun fits your hand and how you handle it, there are additional operational considerations:

1. Stopping Power (Caliber):
Does the caliber provide enough stopping power for your needs? While larger calibers like .45 ACP offer more stopping power, they typically come with increased recoil. Make sure you can handle the caliber you choose.

2. Recoil Management:
Can you manage the recoil? This is particularly important for maintaining accuracy in rapid-fire situations and multiple engagements.

3. Magazine Capacity:
How many rounds can you carry? Different calibers will offer different magazine capacities. For example, a standard .45 ACP might only carry 8-10 rounds, while a 9mm could carry 15 or more. Consider your needs in terms of round count and reload frequency.

Conclusion

Finding the perfect handgun is a personal decision that depends on how the gun fits your hand, your ability to manipulate it, and how well you can shoot it. At JM Training, we focus on these fundamentals to ensure you choose the right weapon system for your personal defense. Always remember to consider stopping power, recoil management, and magazine capacity when making your final decision.
